I've narrowed down my choice of flash for my EOS 55 to the 540EZ.

The reasons are frankly, the 550EX is too expensive, and I don't want
E-TTL in any case. The 540EZ is the only other flash where I can go to
plain TTL on this camera. I understand the 430EZ and 420EZ both give
the annoying pre-flash of A-TTL.

I have no use for a pre-flash, or A-TTL - plain old TTL will do for
me. Plus I like a powerful flash with manual settings.

Plus, the 540EZ can be bought for a reasonable price.

Comments? Is the above correct?

I thought long and hard about E-TTL, but in the end, having a
pre-flash is my primary beef. And all other EX flashes cannot be set
for TTL only. And I used TTL with my EOS 10 and the 380EX in the past
very successfully. Now that I have flash compensation onboard, it will
be even better.
