I am becoming increasingly concerned at the way Canon expect the rest of the
world to subsidise American consumers.

Taking the new EOS 300D as an example, the price in the USA is set at 899
dollars. But they have also published the Japanese price as 120000 Yen, the
European price as 1099 Euro, and the British price as 899 pounds. Converting
these prices into dollars at the official exchange rate shows that the
Japanese consumer is paying the equivalent of 1019 dollars, the European
consumer is paying the equivalent of 1202 dollars, while the British are
expected to pay the equivalent of 1419 dollars!! Note to Canon: 1 dollar
does NOT equal 1 pound, and if you try to con us into paying inflated prices
don't be surprised if British consumers find it cheaper to fly to the USA to
buy at their subsidised prices!!

Watch out with these prices - I think $899 in the US was expected street
price but the £899 was suggested retail price, i.e. list price. I expect
actual UK price to be substantially lower but I checked www.bhphoto.com,
www.ny-camer.de and www.jessops.co.uk today and none of them were listing a
price for the 300D so it isn't possible to perform a meaningful analysis
yet.

As pointed out by someone else, European prices usually include sales tax
whereas US ones don't. Customs charges are fairly low on camera equipment, I
haven't checked the exact category that this would fall into but most camera
equipment is between 0 and 5% in the UK so that won't make a huge
difference.

Nonetheless I'll be checking prices outside the UK before I buy. If Henry
were to let us all know when the camera actually goes on sale then I'm sure
many here would appreciate it.
