Hi Leeuwtje,

The stain on the shutter curtain is a very common
problem with older EOS bodies. The stain is from
the shutter bump stop rubber. As is ages, instead
getting harder like a lot of rubber does, it
softens and turn into a goo-like substance that
starts to smear the shutter curtains. It will
eventually cause the shutter to misfire (not open)
from time to time. The problem will eventually get
worse until the shutter stops working.

The fix is a new bump stop rubber that costs about
$5 or so - the bad news is that to replace it
requires extensive disassembly of the camera and
is quite expensive. I had quotes to get it done
and it was around AU$150 (US$100 or so) to fix.

Most if that is labour costs. Any qualified repairer
can do the fix.

You can clean it off (to an extent) yourself using
alcohol based cleaning fluids/solvents and a cotton
bud. There are 3 main problems with this:

1. cleaning the back is easy though the film door,
but a shutter has 2 sides. The goo gets on both
sides of the shutter. The front can only be
cleaned by locking up the mirror. With an RT, you
will find it pretty difficult to get to the front
due to the fixed mirror.

2. without replacing the rubber, it'll just start to
smear again when you use the camera.

3. if you're not careful you can damage the shutter
blades resulting in an even more expensive repair.

Carefully cleaning it yourself WILL delay the
inevitable repair.

Cheers
Gary
