Xmm, but what I meant is the wonderful ability to do manual focus
adjustments without switching to manual focusing mode. This is where
USM  shines - no need to switch between AF and manual modes. Just stay
in AF, then manually adjust the focusing ring and shoot - yet staying
in AF.

Obviously, I do not think there might be any lack of thought by Canon
(or any other major camera manufacturer) engineering, obviously there
are reasons (perhaps even more marketing-related).
