Skip,

I bought my Sigma EX 17-35 HSM in June 2000. It was second-hand so I've no
idea when it was first sold. It did suffer from a "lazy" aperture motor
which ceased stopping down (on an EOS10 film camera and with no error
indication) when it got cold - like when shooting amongst Alpine glaciers.
No problem when at normal temperatures (5 to 25 deg C, say). Had the
aperture motor replaced in January 2001, so it was this vintage of motor
which gave trouble when I got my EOS10D in March 2003. Had it re-chipped
successfully, and 6 months later I dropped it onto concrete. No other lens
in my possession has been into service so often! Following the last repair,
it now feels very smooth indeed.
(I do like the proper wide-angle effects one can get on film!)
