Indeed. My current approach is to make two identical backups to DLT-IV
cartridges of each added 40GB of images. One goes to the office, one goes in
the fire safe. Even at 40GB it's more media handling than I'd like, but at
least it's only 1/9 the amount that DVD would require.
Though DLT is an extremely reliable backup medium, I'd just as soon use some
form of write-once media, but not until it at least matches the 40GB media I'm
using now. Even the next-generation optical media (Blu-Ray, etc.) won't do
that until they reach their double-layer stage, which is years away. I won't
be surprised if I'm still scanning then. Meanwhile I hope I don't find it
neccessary to restore from backup! :)
