And, overall, how do you (or anybody here with one) like your 5D?
Hi David,
Your finding that the 17-85 is less flare resistant than the old Zuiko
surprises me, as I find mine to be a lot better than that. Again, as
you know I'm quite particular about distortion for some of my stuff,
but a lot is distortion sensitive, so won't be corrected.
Battery life is, like Skip wrote, not as good as with the 20D, but
acceptable unless like Tina you come from the 1DMkII. If I hung a car
battery off the bottom of my camera, I'd get more shots per charge as
well :-), but I'm delighted with the lack of weight of the 5D so I can
live with 500-600 shots per charge, and I carry extra batteries.
I'm generally very satisfied with the camera; I won't sell the 20D as
it's my backup and telephoto camera. The 5D lets me get the
architectural shots I do for my work better, due to resolution,
useability with all my wideangles including the 24TSE, 16-35 and 12-24
Sigma, as well as the 15FE, and better viewfinder. The camera's not
perfect, but it certainly is the most reasonable one for me at this
time. Its price, while significantly higher than that of the 20D is
not so high that I would be leery of trading it in when an upgrade
comes along. Following the same cycle with the 1Ds series would use up
money that is better spent on paying off my new car! Most 'upgrade'
features of the 1Ds over the 5D are wasted on my use anyway.
I don't have any links to large files, but I just took a bunch of
shots last Sunday, mostly of my grandkids:

Good Mornin' Henning!
Thanks for your comments.
Like both Skip and yourself, I can live with 500 shots a day. I seldom
shoot more than 10 rolls of 24 (or equivalent) in a day. The comment on
Leica's DM-R is that the battery is only good for 100-120 shots - and
that's not acceptable, in my mind. I was fearing, after Tina's comments,
that the 5D was in that range. Good to hear it's not!
For me, the advantage of the 5D would be to use my w/a Leica glass, and
dump the 17~85-EFS mount lens. Maybe I got a 'dud', but I've never
owned a lens, by any maker, that I would describe as "junk", but this
one does it for me. It's tendency to flare (yes, I'm using the lens
hood) is awful! (And yes, my Auto Zuiko zoom was much, much better!)
Anyway, I peeked at your family/grandkids shots taken with the 5D. Very
nice. I particularly like IMG_1382. A charming shot of Tanya, looking
very grandmotherly. :-) Nicely done. :-)
Cheers!
