They don't need to be. Following advice posted on the Amateur Photographer
bulletin board,
http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/275973/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1

I bought nylon paint brushes from my local crafts store for around £4 each,
and IPA from Maplins.

Quoted from the 1st. posting:

Here is a useful link:

The above article shows that you can clean your DSLR sensor using a standard
nylon brush, the kind that can be purchased from an artists shop for ~£4 or
less. I used a 3/8" nylon brush (German made), and then cleaned it with
isopropyl alcohol (available from Maplin) followed by soapy water. I then
used a Giotto rocket air blower to charge the brush prior to sweeping. I now
have a D70 with a clean dust free sensor.

I think anyone with a modicum of commonsense could use this method. Just
make sure the brush is clean before you apply it to the sensor.

All I will add is that sensor dust on my 10D didn't seem to be a problem -
over 30 months use I had to look for it, and I shot over 6,000 images before
buying my 5D which has shown problems without my looking for dust, after
~600 images..
(Haven't tried my nylon brushes yet, but I am prepared.)

Cheers,
