Hello all,

All of a sudden my Speadlite 550EX is leaking some kind of transparant fluid
from the hinge. After wiping it off and flipping the flash head from
horizontal to vertical and back again, there was new fluid on the rotation
shaft. This happened to me several times in the time that I noted and tested
it.

After deciding to see if it was still working, the back panel lit up in a
strange way, showing figures that don't even exist. Mid you, the leakage was
on the other side of the swivel head and not anywhere near the battery
compartment. After testing it for two minutes the Speedlite started to make
funny noises for a few seconds before the thing gave up on me completely.

Now, when I try to turn it back on after a few weeks, it still makes that
funny noise, but otherwise remains completely dead.

The flash has been in my photobag all of the time, and there is no evidence
of spills or leaks in the bag. Actually the only point where you can notice
it is on the 1.5 inch wide shaft tube that allows the head to point upward
or forward. Every time the spilled quantity of fluid was like about a big
raindrop.

I keep my flash inside my leather protection bag all the time when it's in
my photobag, and in there it is covered by protection from the bag as well.

Does anyone have any clue what it could be, and also tell me what would be
best to do ?

All the best from Holland,

Iwan Bogels
