Paul, E-TTL II is a feature of the CAMERA not the flash. E-TTL II will work equally as well with any EX flash including 550EX,420EX, and 220EX. The main benefit of E-TTL II is that is designed to eliminate under exposure that occurs with straight reflections from the subject.
