Is there an average price, in the US, for professionally cleaning the sensor
on a Canon 1D? Thanks for your help.

To Grant and the group,

Skip the "professional cleaning" and do it yourself. Some group members have complained that, after giving their cameras up for weeks, they get them back as dirty as when sent - the dust pattern simply rearranged.

I can understand your caution, cleaning a sensor yourself, but it is a routine maintenance procedure you should learn. I was very hesitant to touch the innards of my new 1Ds four years ago, but I had to get over the fear. The sensor gets an electrostatic charge and attracts dust like a big magnet. Any cleaning, by you or the authorized service center, must be considered temporary.

I found this site to be very useful; it has very clear tutorials on cleaning and products.

Myself? I use PEC pads and Eclipse fluid. But for quick cleaning, I also have a Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly, a horribly overpriced device that works pretty well. This cleaning routine is something I usually do before every job. For the foreseeable future, cleaning your own sensor is part of the photographic craft.
