Useful links, thanks. One of them is for MATE, so that's irrelevant, and the Cinnamon one is for EPEL 7... so it's a bit confusing; the packages I looked at are branched for EPEL 8. I agree that I'll probably have to maintain them, so my immediate interest is not maintaining the whole desktop but just enough to get the file manager running. Hoping to hear from Leigh, but if I don't hear otherwise and the packages work fine, I'll request comaintainership for the packages I need and ask to be set as the EPEL POC next week.
