About diagrams, you may use Supporting Materials with images and select it as the publishing diagram by clicking the element -> Diagrams -> User Defined Diagrams (if I'm not mistaken).
Anyway, I agree with you that the editor should allow the import of custom icons or shapes, in order to better graphically represent the processes and not enforce a unique way of representation. Remember that old proverb: "An image is worth a thousand words". But 1.2 has a great evolution with the graphical editor. You should check it.
