you're absolutely correct! wow, although i've been using gnome for maybe six months, i wasn't aware that menu accelerators could be edited in place.

That's peculiar, because - just to prevent these sorts of incidents - the editable menu accelerators preference is disabled by default. It has to be enabled explicitly to work.
