Martin, Heiko, OK, setting the start levels appropriately makes it work. I was confused because although I had set the start levels for the weaving service and the intial start level in my config file, I had neglected to check the start level for my app. bundle (which was set at 1). I set that to 5 and all works fine (and do not need to 'clean').
