Dear Chris, Metastock formula language is the key to using metastock . 
Everything that you do in metastock is based on the code you use.

Indicators, system testers, explorations and experts all require some type of 
code.

as for your question of alerts, You mentioned that you have End of day version. 
I assume that you want real time alerts, then you will need a real time version 
of metastock and a real time data feed .

Or if you have an ipad they have apps that update in real time, check out 
missingstep.com
