James,
The clear coat on my plane was part of a multi-step process, and the paint
was fomulated specifically for that application.

I have no idea if clear coat could be applied over existing paint. It
would be best to check with a reputable aircraft paint shop however; my
best
guess is that it would not work after the fact.

Does anyone else have experience on this topic?

Is it possible to clearcoat an aircraft after it has been painted for some
time? How is it applied?

It depends upon how many layers of paint the plane has accumulated over
the
years.

A good strip & repaint will probably drop a couple of pounds from the
plane.

My Ercoupe had as many as 6 (!) layers of paint in places before I had it
striped and repainted. New paint should not add more than 10 lbs to a
'Coupe (my Ercoupe paint is clear coated as part of the process, so it has
an extra layer).

Of course if you just put on a new coat with a brush or roller....

Hi Ed,
I really don't know how much the paint weighed. When we stripped my
plane I collected all the paint in a 5 gallon bucket with the intention of
weighing it, but never did. I'd guess that it was around 20 lbs., though.

    Syd,

That’s a great answer and great info.

If I had a 415-C or CD, I’d consider stripping the paint and going
shiny
to save the weight. Could it really be 28-40 lb. for the fuselage, wing
roots and tail?
