And being legal and safe is a bad thing, why??

A very good reason NOT to weigh the airplane. We bought a Beech Skipper
for our FBO, and before I could stop him, one of our IAs weighed the darn
thing - thought we would want to know for sure.

Dummy- he cost me at least 80 pounds, and made a very good trainer
virtually unrentable, because now it's too heavy to send a student out for
a checkride with the examiner.

          In order to get an accurate empty weight, the plane must be
      weighed on certified scales. According to my paperwork, my empty
      weight was 830 lbs. When we actually weighed the plane (after
      scraping out at least 5 lbs. of dirt and old oil from the belly) it
      weiged 932 lbs. Big difference! I talked to another FBO who had
      certified scales and he said it was very common for a plane to weigh
      around 100 lbs. higher than the paperwork weight.

            Al,
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            Please do all your calculations again with fuel = 6 lb./gal.
            Full fuel for my D was 24 gallons or 144 lb. but with that, I
            had gross weight of 1400 lb.
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            Andrew,
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            My empty weight was 895 lb. with a full panel of old, heavy
            instruments.
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            Having an empty weight of 910 is high. Changing to rag wings
            brings you down to about 870 lb. empty for a useful load of
            390 lb. If I remember right, a serial number in the 700 range
            had two eight gallon wing tanks and a 5 gallon header tank for
            total of 21 gallons or 126 lb.
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            That leaves Andrew with:
            metal wings:    1260  - 910 = 350 lb. useful load
                  350 – 126 fuel = 224 lb. for pilot, passenger and
luggage
                  (subtract 6 lb. if one wing tank is 9 gallons)
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            fabric wings:   1260 – 870 = 390 lb. useful load
                                    390 – 126 fuel = 264 lb. for pilot,
            passenger and luggage
                  (ditto above)
            <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
            That plane may have left the factory much closer to 830 lb.
            with minimal instruments.  Just guessing.

            Okay, so with some extrapolation I'm guessing that you have a
            useful load of 1260 (about) which means the plane weighs 910.
            You should have weighed it empty, or subtracted your fuel
load.
            Doesn't sound too bad until you figure that fuel is at 7 lbs
            per gallon, 24 gallons will be 168, so you need to be 182 lbs
            or less to be within the envelope. If you have the small
tanks
            (8+8+5=21) you'll have 147 lbs of fuel so you can have that
            extra hamburger and still check in under 203. Add another
            person and you're way out.

            I hope you guys and gals can see why weight, or the lack of
it,
            is so important on these airplanes. Metal wings, layers of
            paint, useless instruments and radios, thick heavy interior
            panels are all enemies of these flying machines. Next annual
            why not start your Ercoupe on a diet. Start getting rid of
all
            that excess junk that is not needed or used.

             List,

             Still looking at the "Coupe in the corner" and read the logs
             tonight. One thing that caught my eye is that the last time
             the aircraft was weighed it had a useful load of around
             350lbs, is that typical of a "C" model with metalized wings
             and a C-85?. Or, is that a little heavier than most?.

             Andrew
