Al -

The sport license is far more than simply self medicals.

First, the training requirements are different than for a private license,
reducing the cost to obtain a sport license. For instance, there is no
night training, and no required training in air traffic control
procedures,
landings at controlled airports, etc.

Further, the sport pilot can more easily transition to other class of
aircraft. He can go from a land plane to a sea plane, to a gyroplane, to
a
weight shift aircraft, or to a glider merely be obtaining instruction,
then
taking an approval ride with another instructor and getting the log
endorsement. No formal flight tests involved.

Once it's thoroughly understood, this new license will be seen as it is -
the greatest thing since sliced bread for recreational, personal aviation.

Well said, Kevin, my thought exactly! What we do notice is that there are
some new planes coming back. A Cub derivative, the Taylorcraft and some
more for about $60K, brand new. Beyond the reach of most folks who won't
care about the regs but definitely within the grasp of some. I really
haven't been following too closely, but is there any reason for the Sport
license other than self medicals?
