Larry,
Don't necessarily give up on night flying. Night flying can be a very
enjoyable experience. The air is cooler and smoother, there is far less
air
traffic, the controllers are less stressed and more relaxed, and the view
outside can be incredible!

Just start slow and choose your time, place, & circumstances. Start with
pattern work or short local flights. Later you can fly in areas or along
routes you are comfortable and familiar with, choose clear & preferably
moon
lit nights, make sure you are rested, and plan it so you can land before
you
become tired or fatigued.

I frequently fly from Southern California to Northern California in the
evenings if the weather is good, and it is some of the most enjoyable
flying
I have had.
