I flew from Carlsbad (Palomar) to Hawthorne airport which is along side of LAX years ago in a Cessna 120, only radio and compass at nite. When I left Carlsbad sky was clear no wind, I thought it was a piece of cake. Just past John Wayne Airport a fog bank had move in. When I got past the fog bank I was out over the ocean several miles, and it was a shock, it took some time to figure out where I was, and the visibility had gotten bad. I finally called Hawthorne Tower and got a DF steer. So there is danger in those kinds of flights if the unexpected happens. N5698F  TED
