Hi Dennis and Ercoupers. I am sorry to hear about your seaplane friends
but hope they will be
OK.
I too had a bit of bad luck with the Mooney I traded up to recently (from
a very dependable
Ercoupe I might add).
My engine fell apart at 10,500' in cruise flight, with my wife and baby
aboard. It was our first
big cross country flight and we were headed to Shreport, LA to visit my
wife's dad in the hospital,
over Labor Day weekend.
The engine lost power, then shook itself apart over middle Mississippi so
I declared an emergency.
I was too far past the last aiport I passed and not close enough to the
next airports on the chart.
With smoke in the cockpit and oil on the windscreen I decided to land on a
US highway and
let the ATC folks know about it. Like I did in the 'Coupe, I usually fly
with VFR Flight Following so
was already on frequency with them.
Had to come in OVER a set of traffic lights and UNDER the next set of
lights. Fortunatley for
me and my family, and those on the ground, nobody was hurt. Unfortunately
for the
plane, a pickup truck blocked part of my rollout so there is a lot of
airframe damage, but nothing
a ton of $$$ can't fix.
All the emergency folks on the ground were very complimentary toward the
emergency landing.
Who knew it was Flowood, MS's busiest intersection?
Of course the NTSB and FAA are very interested in my engine at this point.
Guess I should've kept the SuperCoupe.
