Stephen,

I bought one and handed it to my mechanic and said, please install this.
Then paid the bill, of course.

They drill a small hole in the exhaust manifold a certain distance from
the cylinder and put the sensor in there. The leads are run to the
cockpit and plugged into the gauge which gets mounted in the panel.

There's question about which cylinder to use for a single probe EGT. We
chose the rear-most, not having any knowledge otherwise.

But I was advised that a 4-probe is better because the hottest cylinder
can change at different times in the flight. You want to make your
adjustments based on the hottest cylinder. Also, a 4-probe EGT meter
can give you early warning of some engine problems.

I'd recommend using one with a sensitive scale or, preferably, a digital
one. Digital gives you an absolute number and a sensitive response.
The ones I've been looking at are the (non-TSOed) Stratomaster Smart
Singles (you can do a google search for "digital EGT" or "Stratomaster
Smart Singles").

What's the process for installing an EGT gauge?
