Ercoupe Wooden Fuselage

Design Report

Circa 1941

By 1941, U.S. outlook for the availability of aircraft aluminum had
worsened, and the Engineering Research Corporation, builders of the
Ercoupe, along with other struggling airplane manufacturers had begun
looking into the feasibility of laminated wood and wooden shell fuselage
and wing construction.

We discover that Vidal Research Corporation of New Rochelle, New York
filled a niche as a qualified sub-contractor for the types of analyses and
fabrications ERC needed for the development of a wooden Ercoupe. Vidal
also pursued work for Bell Aircraft for the development of the XP-77, an
ultralight fighter somewhat along the lines of the Ercoupe and also to be
made of wood.

Knowledge of Vidal's contribution to the design of a plywood Ercoupe
airplane has probably been lost to the Ercoupe community until now. The
item up for bids is an engineering report from the early 1940's done by
Vidal for ERC; it has to be one of the few tangibles to survive the period
of development of wooden fuselage Ercoupe airplanes by Engineering
Research Corporation.
