I was also wrong in not cautioning that drop light used to place the bulb in the hole be properly grounded and connected to an outlet with a ground, or better yet a GFIC. If your friends had been using such they'd still be here. I am sorry to hear of your loss. I've been associated with the electrical end of things since 1955. I am a retired member of IBEW local 76 and hold the FCC General Radio Telephone license--downgraded from a 1st phone. So I admit to being very negligent in not posting this warning since I have an electrical background. I do hold that if the bulb is carefully placed in the hole, using a properly grounded fixture turned on and then used as a light source while inspecting the center section, it is no more dangerous than a regular caged drop light which is regularly used around the hanger.
