Databases do need updating especially if you use it for IFR. Most VFR's would be okay witha yearly update. However, databases are not perfect. Someone must key in the data, so human error is still there. My local airport, KRHP, is indicated about a mile from the actual field. Works out kind of strange: I get a picture of the runway on my screen. I can zoom in and actually watch as I taxi down the runway. But the Marker for the airport is a mile to the east. So, going direct to the airport will put me a mile off course. The Approach does work okay. Just the like airport icon is a mile off. If your GPS has the WAAS function, activate it. That is neat - If I could get that close to a woman, life would be complete....
