Hi Joe,
    The cork was coated with shellac.  Shellac works fine with avgas, 
but not very well with auto gas.  I've seen it act kind of like paint 
that has been treated with paint stripper.  If you are considering using 
auto gas I recommend recoating your cork floats with epoxy varnish.  You 
can get it from Poly-Fiber.
