I've read a few articles about Wright's crash, and many mention the problem he was having of the propeller getting stuck in "low gear." The first time I read it, I thought it was just a misunderstanding- Wright describing the airplane having poor performance because of the thin air, using the _expression_ "getting stuck in low gear," and the journalist interpreting that literally. But now, I still see articles that make mention of the prop being stuck in a certain gear, one even being specific and saying second gear. Maybe one of you that's actually seen the plane can answer my question- did this aircraft have a gearbox between the engine and the propeller, or is this just further misunderstanding of the journalists writing the articles?

Folks,
It seems that Mr Wright made a drastic manuever in the
last few moments of his life to save people on the
ground. I knew that he was a great man from the few
moments I had the opportunity to talk to him. But
this final act of valor puts him right up there with
the very best of our heros. Such a tragic loss for the
aviation community and the world, for that matter.
