In the ultralight/sport world, Tom Olenik, an engine overhauler/dealer
who is very highly respected, is a regular on the weekly
http://www.ultraflightradio.com web "radio" program.

Today, Tom told a similar story about a pilot who had an engine problem
that he couldn't duplicate on the ground after his forced landing. The
engine just insisted on working correctly. He took off and the failure
happened again resulting in damage to the airplane and injury.

Tom said very firmly that airplane engines don't heal themselves. If
you've got a problem, solve it on the ground and don't fly till you have
solved it.

One day my friend EC called me over to his Starduster Too
to ask about an upcoming event. In passing, he was bitching
about a fuel pump just replaced but still acting up a bit.

Next day, he took off, and the engine quit a couple hundred
feet in the air. 6 weeks later he was out of the hospital, a
couple of inches shorter, with a bunch of metal holding
his leg and pelvis together.

Lesson from EC and Mr. Wright...if you have a chronic
problem, fix it before it fixes you.
