The problem is that a lot of them (like the Airmap 300) are being
phased out of support by the manufacturers, and are developing
glitches. That's why Lowrance is offering a price of $399 on the
500 to owners of the 300-series.

My 300 now has two glitches...a long 'warm up' time to acquire
satellites (15 minutes), and an external power jack that is a
bit intermittent. (I just use the rechargeable pack, and plug IT
in to the power, giving me redundancy.)

Add to that that the back-up GPS II needed some attention to its
battery springs, and my Dead Reckoning skills have gotten some
polish of late. Kind of enjoyable, actually, setting a course for an
airport 30 miles away and finding it :-)

The occasion of the failing GPS

You do see GPS's offered on EBay quite frequently.
