Dave, that's quite a bit of free play.  Crawl under the instrument panel and check the slack in the bicycle chain that passes between the two control shafts.  If you push up in the middle it should only go up about 1/2".  If you have more than that, the turnbuckle can be tightened to take up the slack.  Your mechanic should do it and then safety wire the turnbuckle.

Hey Ed  (and all)

I finally have my bird rig balanced well enough that I need not carry a constant left or right pressure on the yoke.

SO

I have the opportunity to find that the yoke has a bit of free-play…and it scares me a little.  Maybe it was always there, but I could not know because I always had to pull left on it.  Maybe not.  Maybe it is OK and normal.  Maybe it is not.

I dunno.  Can anybody advise me?  (or re-assure me?)

The free play is probably about ½ to ¾ inch, max total.

Bruce,

YES!  Glad to hear of his improvement!

Ask him to please take all possible care.  We?re looking forward to hearing from him and, I hope, seeing him again.
