The with the shields removed the reflection off of the prop from the lights can be distracting at night.

I am a sport pilot (don't fly at night) but I use my landing lights to
increase visibility of my plane in the landing pattern and when my traffic
detector is triggered. I also use them to taxi from the shop to the hangar
after those long evenings working on the plane.

I bet eliminating the shields would reduce drag. I think those are there to
elimminate reflections off the prop.
