I was at an RC model event in NJ yesterday and the guy next to us on the
flight line had a model for sale. It was unbuilt, all fiberglass with
panel lines and rivet detail molded in. It was a 96"wingspan Ercoupe
415. Exactly like mine. I thought about it for about a minute or so and
bought it. I cant wait to build it and paint like mine. I wish it would
fit in the baggage compartment. I will send pictures when it is done. I
may use it for competition at Top Gun if it flys as good as it looks.

Bill,
If it is the one I am thinking about, it is a very good model kit.. It
was reviewed last year in R.C. Reporter. They detailed all of the
components and assembly in the article. I was tempted to buy one at that
time, but settled for the Jack Stafford kit which was given to me to
photograph for the the cover for the September 1996 issue of R.C.
Modeler magazine. It featured my coupe, the model coupe, and Ercouper
Kathy Wilson at the national convention in Newton, Kansas.
The 96 in. coupe had a very good review and he did indeed enter it the
Top Gun contest last year. He fell in love with it..Dang it, I just
recently threw out of of the RC Reporter magazines, but if you or
anyone else is considering building it, I would try to find a copy of
R.C. Reporter. You will not regret it.
Just by chance, I n case I didn't throw it out, I will redouble my
efforts in an all out search for it. I am sure that some of the other
R.C. enthausists have built one and will respond.
Good luck.
Bill Coons.

Subject: RE: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Radio question
Glen,
I do not think you will care for the results. I wanted the same thing.
Tried it. Didn't work.
Since I was using a hand-held radio, I wanted to remove the fragile
antenna that screwed on just behind my cockpit and use the stub antenna
on my handheld, instead. Much more elegant solution, I thought.
I was right, it WAS more elegant. My cockpit cover went on really much
better, too.
BUT,
My handheld radio could not communicate as far as I could spit.
My conclusion: The stub antenna is a truly limited device for limited
purposes. Even at altitude, it just cannot reach far.
A proper antenna must be of proper length to do a proper job. It is a
matter, as you probably know, of ineluctable physics relating antenna
length to wave-length.
So, I went back to my fuselage mounted antenna with an inelegant wire
running from it to my hand-held. Now, I can talk to the tower from 9
miles out and even get flight following from Indianapolis enroute almost
all the way from Tennessee to south central Illinois. All on my
hand-held.
Folks told me my stub antenna would be unsatisfactory. But, I had to
try it myself. I did. They were right.
OR for a much more compact version of the above, IN VERSE FORM:
***************************
It was a thing that could not be done.
Everyone said that they knew it.
But I faced right up to what could not be done
AND.
I bloody well could NOT do it!

Does anyone know if the antenna connection for a King KX-145 is a simple
SO-239 screw-on type, or a BNC or something else. I want to remove the
antenna connection from the 145 and plug it directly into my Icom
handheld.

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] TECH articles on FLYIN
All,
There's no rule against posting technical articles on FLYIN.
However, I'd encourage all to post appropriate articles on TECH instead.
There are a dozen or so people who don't want to read miscellaneous
articles
and so, are only on the tech list. Some of them are among our best
techies.
(Everyone should be a member of TECH.)
Appropriate articles for TECH include anything to do with maintaining or
flying Coupes or related regulatory, flying technique and general aviation
subjects appropriate to Coupers (i.e. TFRs, radios and antennas or
insurance).
Please, though, don't double post to both groups. If it's appropriate for
TECH, that's the only place it needs to be posted because everyone should
be
a member of TECH. If it's not appropriate for TECH, then it should not be
double posted to TECH.
The discussions have been great for a long time.
Compliments, all.

Dave,
Here's an overgrown little girl that would like one
too! I am also still wanting the elaborate electric
train set with lots of extras like tunnels bridges,
buildings, trees, switches, etc.
When I was a kid, the little boys didn't get the fancy
trains either, unless the dad had some big bucks. Even
back then, the big train sets were expensive. Oh well,

Hmmmmm....you hit kinda close to home.....Motorcycles, full scale
coupe....and about 40 model airplanes (No kidding) hanging in my basement
collected over 30 years in the hobby......I also collect lionel trains.
Last count I had 12 engines of various types and over 150 different cars
to tow behind them, they are far from perfect as my boys and I setup new
layouts every couple of years and we run them constantly, we usually pick
them up a tag sales cheap......it makes me wonder if we all like the same
things? Thoughts?

I'm assuming that this is on topic, noting that train sets seem to be. I
used to collect beer cans. Do they count? I remember having an entire rec
room wall shelved and holding hundreds of cans. I recall that the most
sought after ones were unopened - mine were all empty. I don't "do" e-Bay,
but wouldn't be surprised if my collection still exists somewhere. Don't

I've still got my beer can collection, but I haven't collected actively
since I got my Coupe 24 years ago. I've got about 2000 different cans,
mostly empty, but opened from the bottom.
