Ron,

I second that! INTO THE WIND is a must read. Max led a truly amazing life.
I have two copies, one for home and one for the hanger!

I was fortunate to grow up in Winona, MN and spend much of my time at the
airport. I'm too young to have known Max (though I'm told I met him when I
was a toddler) but I have heard many great stories about him. I live in
Winona again and keep my Ercoupe at Max Conrad Field. Max's name and
stories seem to still work their way into hanger talk regularly.
Unfortunately the airport isn't what it use to be and the FBO is not too
kind to GA. Ironic that Max Conrad was often referred to as the
"Grandfather of General Aviation" and the "Flying Grandfather"

Ron Hynes INTO THE WIND

Into the Wind,
the story of Max Conrad written by Sally Buegeleisen
Random House New York

On a Cross country trip back in May 1983 I had the pleasure of Landing my
PA17 Vagabond at Max's Field
at Winona Minnesota on the island in the Mississippi and when I entered the
Terminal Building I was met by a young fellow who upon seeing Canadian
Markings on the Vag asked why I had stopped by. When I told him that I just
had to touch down at Max's airfield he let out a very loud yell to all who
were there, announcing that this here Canadian had come all the way from
Eastern Canada to see Max's Airfield. I felt good about that.

After Reading that book I just had to stop and visit, and pay my respects to
a great American.

Max Passed away in his sleep on April 3rd/89 as I recall. He had logged
over 50,000 hours.
That book is one of my Treasures.
