The problem with compressed air in airplanes, Scott, is the weight of
the tanks.  What one needs to do is compute efficiency = pressure and
volume verses tank weight.  As one who has been into Ercoupe gas
tanks, I can attest that they are very light.  Even the "turnplate"
ones, which were lead-coated steel!  
  The problem of containing things that are gaseous at normal
temperatures and atmosperic pressures is what has plagued the hydrogen
powered set like forever.  Electricity is even harder to store.
