Larry,
this is very sad and every loss is one too many!

What I do not understand is why small plane crashes relative to other risks/
sources of fatal accidents seem to be so extremely spectacular, and why such
crashes are receiving so much public attention, suggesting that flying in a
small plane is much more dangerous than e.g. swimming in a lake or wildwater
rafting in a river.

For example, has the press ever addressed the issue of how many people are
dying each year swimming, boating or just falling into backyard ponds?
According to the Dept of Health, in 2005 there were 3,582 fatal unintentional
drownings in the U.S., averaging ten deaths per day. We never seem to read much
about these sad losses. And each of these is one too many, too!

Cheers

So what's with the rash of small plane accidents? In the past week there was a
mid-air in Wyoming, a fatal crash near Shell Knob, Missouri, a crash in
California, an Angel Flight crashed near Boston, now this. I'm starting to
think small planes are dangerous!

Just on the 5 o'clock news. An Ercoupe crashed in De Soto County this
afternoon killing the pilot. De Soto County is just south of Arcadia
or east of Port Charlotte. That's the only info available right now.
I will keep you posted.
