Dan.

I think TSO does not mean FAA approval.

However it may be that a sign off of our mechanic is FAA approval enough on
items like this.

Thanks, Hartmut

Approval of non-TSO'd items has been discussed and researched in this
discussion group.
Consensus of EAA and AOPA is that if the plane was certified with an item
(including the wingtip and tail lights) then it doesn't have to
be TSO'd because there wasn't TSO at that time (i.e. original wasn't a TSO'd
item). Newer items (ELT, TXP, etc) need to be TSO'd to be
approved. For those of you still uneasy about this, ask your mechanic if he
will sign off on the LED lights.

Now, there you go.
Use that and you are all set within a few seconds.
The lamps might not be FAA approved though.

They already have LED bulb replacements. I've got one in the tail light of my
coupe.

I guess you can replace the whole lamp units with new ones that use LED's.

But I would not even dream about it. The Grimes teardrop lamps on my Coupe are
admired at any public display, the lines of the streamline design of the
Thirties come to a final conclusion at the tail light.

It is a piece of art. I bought it because of that. I intend to keep it in it's
original state as long as possible.

If I wanted a plane with all the latest Gizmos, I'd go and by one of these
plastic planes that no one can remember the name of and there you have all the
stuff you want.

But then, maybe in the times of miniaturization, they'll come out with bulb
replacement lamps that are LED's but fit the standard sockets, who knows?

Folks,
Is there a high tech landing light replacement for the old GE "head light"
lamp, like halogen or something else that uses current technology? My nav
lights use the old bayonet type socket on the wing tips, much like the cheap
flash lights you get at Ace Hardware, but of course bigger. The tail lamp has
the two conductors on the end instead of one like the wing tip lamps. Are we
stuck with using the old technology replacement lamps?
