Hi Darick,

I presume this is in reference to serial no. 1462. Even if your bird has been "upgraded" to the Electrol strut shown on p. 20, the following would apply.

With reference to Ercoupe Service Memorandum No. 41, it should not be necessary to remove the wheel support to disassemble the oleo. This is plain in the description in the Ercoupe Service Manual.

You speak of a "fork...do you have the Forney fork and the 5" nose wheel? Either way, after removing the nut off the bottom, you have to heat the support to 200ºF by immersing it in boiling water or oil (220º-300ºF), then tapping the top of the support with a soft nose hammer because the fork is a heat-shrink fit on the inner cylinder assembly.

The Ercoupe Parts Manual shows the components in exploded view also on p. 18, Fig. 14.

Not everyone can comprehend mechanical drawings.

Regards,

WRB

Guys,
I'm trying to get the nose gear apart.  All the nuts, bolts, etc. are off from top to bottom and it's laying on the ground.  I'm trying to get to the seals on the inside.  Does the fork have to come off?  That's the only thing I can see left to do.  I took the nut off at the bottom on the inside of the fork, thinking that holds the fork on, but it doesn't move at all in relation to the steel tubing.  Is this just a very snug fit?  I've looked at the drawings, but I'm still having a difficult time understanding the assembly.  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Darick
