All,
In my post early this morning I said: "I think we owe [new Ercoupe enthusiasts] our best efforts to dispense wisdom over confusion...". As Churchill once said, "Sometimes our best efforts are not enough...we must do what is required."
In my earlier post in my haste to reveal a new "truism" I inadvertently got tangled up in my mental blocks and stated something totally WRONG! I really appreciate John Cooper's careful reading catching my inadvertent error.
Recently I had misstated the Light Sport weight limit as 1360 lbs. instead of 1320 lbs. Again, I stand corrected. Thanks, Ed. I note with no small embarrassment that I had done that several times in the past.
I said: "you can't stall a Ercoupe in a glide at 45º or less angle of bank at any airspeed below 70 mph!" Not true.
What I should have said was that "So long as True Indicated Airspeed (TIAS) is 70 mph or above you can't stall a Ercoupe in a glide even in a turn of up to 45º angle of bank." The challenge of maneuvering to accomplish the best possible off-airport forced landing is reduced by eliminating all possibility of a stall so long as this airspeed (or higher) is maintained.
Hopefully most will find this simple observation useful and worth remembering.
Sorry for the goofs, WRB
