I think the best solution for him would be to find a two-control Coupe and modify the seat back cushions to give a nicely formed and padded seat back with minimum thickness.

The original cushions on my Coupe were a lot thinner than the cushions I've seen on many reupholstered Coupes. At 5' 11" I bumped my head on the canopy of several Coupes with replacement seat cushions but never in my own Coupe.

Fred Weick, the Ercoupe designer, was 6' 4" if I recall correctly.

Also, your tall friend may want to avoid planes with the instrument panel that extends a few inches lower (Forney and later?). I don't know how much leg room is available in Alon Coupes.
