Try configuring a different shell to be used by the terminal. I remember that I had similiar problem with using bash. ksh works ok.

   I had the issue with bash and zsh. `zsh -i` also did eat CPU like.
I don't really use Eric terminal, so workaround is all I need, just
reported the issue. I wander what could cause such a weird behaviour

I did reproduce the issue in awesome and i3 WMs, on Eric5. It seems that it's triggered by checkbox "Interactive shell" (in Terminal settings) set.
Or at least it worked for me.
