Dear ESN-sections!
Dear Presidents!

Every year in August a very special event takes place in Austria: the
European Forum Alpbach! The European Forum, a non-governmental, not-for
profit organization grants scholarships worth EUR 500,- (participation
fee) or more! I was asked by the European Forum in Vienna (which is
organising this unique event in the tyrolean mountains) to make it even
more public all over Europe. Now I am asking you to promote it according
to your possibilities in your section and at your university.

IMPORTANT: The deadline is May 17!

The IDEA: Free of all the usual barriers in both academic and political
life, important topics of our time are discussed at the European Forum
Alpbach. Debates are very informal and the exchange of ideas in an open
atmosphere and with respect for differing points of view is guided by
the common search for truth. Major goals are the reconciliation of
theoretical knowledge and practical life and the establishment of lively
contacts between the international academic elite and young students
from all over the world.

I participated last year myself and would not send you this e-mail, if I
wouldn't be convinced by the idea and programme of the European Forum
Alpbach. The unique "Alpbach Spirit" is hard to describe but worth
discovering. Last year Carlo Lanzinger, NR of Italy, and myself
organised an ESN-BBQ during the AGM, as you could read in the January
edition of Incommon (www.incommon.info, or directly:
http://myy.helia.fi/~kantopor/incommon/03_11/esnnews_bbq.htm) I will for
sure apply this year again for a scholarship and hope to see many of you
and your section in August at the European Forum Alpbach!

Please give as many international students as possible the chance to
participate in this fantastic european event! (further details see below
or at www.alpbach.org)

Since 1945, the European Forum organises a high-ranking
interdisciplinary congress, the European Forum Alpbach, taking place
annually in August in the picturesque Tyrolean mountain village of
Alpbach. The Forum Alpbach brings together academics and professionals,
scientists and practitioners of specialised fields and disciplines of
the social and natural sciences, as well as politicians, artists and
economists.

Depending on the general subject chosen for a particular year,
discussion groups are being held, both in small compact seminar form and
in plenary meetings, dealing with the main issues of our time, as well
as with aspects and problems of our society related to the general
subject. This year's European Forum Alpbach will focus on the general
topic "Boundaries and Beyond" (August 19 - September 4th, 2004).

There is also an annual Alpbach Summer School on European Integration
which is running concurrently with the European Forum Alpbach. The chief
objective of this intensive Summer School is to offer senior students
and young graduates of law, economics, the social and political
sciences, an intensive basic course on the law, economics and politics
of European integration. In addition to the lectures provided by
distinguished teachers of European Community Law, practitioners of the
EU, the Austrian Government, the Austrian Parliament, and of
organisations and socio-economic interest groups representative of a
broad spectrum of civil society will also participate in classes of the
Summer School from time to time, to answer questions and to contribute
to discussions.

Please send the registration form which you can find at www.alpbach.org
