fixing the typo did not do anything. is the proposed solution to set the variable to the folder containing R-x.x.x or the folder containing /bin or /bin itself? the ESS manual is not specific. also why cannot ESS just try `R` and let the shell find it? I can even start R in a shell buffer inside emacs, but ESS does not recognize it and does not send code to it.
