Historical, mainly - non-printable characters are displayed as C escapes, and C had octal escapes before it had hex escapes, so old-timers are more used to the octal escapes.


wouldn't it make more sense to use hexadecimal as in the "byte view" ?

We could, showing 0xF9 as \xF9 rather than \371.
