I just undid the change that forced make-version.pl to be called on
every make (I removed the ".PHONY: cvsversion.h"). My plan B didn't
work. So If you could still try the test I asked for, it might help
me understand what went wrong: Add cvsversion.h to the .PHONY target
in the final Makefile.
