I did the suggestions to no avail - then tried saving the file by specifying a .cap filename suffix - and it worked. I thought it would save with the proper extension automatically - sorry for the fire drill.

What version of Ethereal are you using? If it's a version before 0.9.9, try upgrading to 0.9.9.
