By "glib" did he mean "GLib 1.2[.x]" or did he mean "GLib"? Yes, you can build it with GLib 2.x, but if he meant (as I inferred from his saying that he didn't have X11 installed) that he wanted to build it without GTK+ *or* GLib, you can't do that.
