"automake: warnings are treated as errors" is most likely your problem.
Check your environment; it looks like automake will treat WARNINGS=error as a request for this, for example. There may be other triggers as well. Alternatively, to fix the "subdir-objects" warning at least you can try using the unofficial patchset at https://sourceforge.net/u/uecasm/etherlab-patches/ci/default/tree/ -- it definitely resolves that particular warning, though I'm not sure if it's completely warning-clean.
