well, it's obviously because Azalea and Metacity aren't very GNUstep-friendly
WMs. I'd try to look for a way to stop Azalea from bordering windows when they
are set to borderless.
There is a misunderstanding of borderless in Azalea.
It is fixed in svn.
By the way, Azalea is GNUstep-friendly, but not bug-free. :D
