I don't like this on the desktop, either. It doesn't allow you to collect an infinite amount of files while keeping the same level of structuredness.
If you recall file managers like the Mac Finder, the Windows explorer or GNOME's nautilus, you'll also notice that the concept of re- ordering files in directories is not new. And Nautilus' emblems and the Mac Finder's colors show that it does in fact make perfect sense to allow the user to attach attributes to files that can be seen at first sight.
I think that visual effects like crumpled files and files of different sizes could take a file manager to the next level. :-) Don't you think it makes more sense to do those improvements in an application where a user managers thousands of items (=file manager), rather than an application where most users won't have more than 20 items (=project manager)?
